Simon F. Mitchell's Geology Website - About Simon F. Mitchell

Simon F. Mitchell holds a personal chair "Professor of Sedimentary Geology" at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Kingston, Jamaica.
He has a B.Sc. in Geology, First Class from the University of Hull (1989), and a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Liverpool (1993).
He was awarded the Moore Medal by the Yorkshire Geological Society for his undergraduate mapping project on Raasay. the University of Liverpool (1993).

Current Research

  • Geology of Jamaica and the Greater Caribbean Region. This work has involved detailed mapping, section logging, biostratigraphic collections, sedimentological studies.
  • Hydrocarbon exploration in the Caribbean. My work involves using local geological knowledge to develop hydrocarbon prospectivity by working with companies and government organisations.
  • Resource development. I have been heavily involved in developing economic geology projects (limestones, sand and gravel, metalic minerals) and in geological surveys for infrastructure development.
  • Rudist bivalves: taxonomy, biostratigraphy, palaeoecology and palaeogeography. This work is using rudist bivalves and associated fossils (macrofossils and microfossils) for biostratigraphy and correlation of units across the Caribbean and Central America.
  • Coleoid taxonomy and evolution. I have a long-standing interest in the evolution of this fossil group.
